Reiki is one of those words that gets thrown around a lot in wellness circles, often without a clear explanation of what it actually is, how it works, or why so many people swear by it. As a Usui Reiki Master who has witnessed profound transformations in my own life and in the lives of my clients, I want to give you a real, grounded answer.
The Definition: What Reiki Actually Is
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese energy healing modality developed in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui. The word itself is made up of two Japanese words: rei, meaning universal or spiritual, and ki, meaning life force energy. Together, Reiki translates roughly to "universal life force energy."
The foundation of Reiki, and of most Eastern healing traditions, is the understanding that the human body is not just physical. We are also energetic beings. This life force energy flows through us, and when that flow is disrupted, blocked, or out of balance, we experience it as physical pain, emotional heaviness, mental fog, or spiritual disconnection.
Reiki works by channeling healing energy through the practitioner's hands into the client's energy field, restoring flow, releasing blockages, and bringing the body back into a state of balance and wholeness.
"Reiki doesn't heal you. It creates the conditions for your body, mind, and energy to heal themselves."
How Does Reiki Work?
During a Reiki session, the client lies fully clothed on a massage table (or sits comfortably for virtual sessions). The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above different areas of the body, moving through the energy field and allowing healing energy to flow where it's needed most.
Reiki practitioners are trained to sense areas of stagnation, overactivity, or imbalance in the energy field, what many traditions call the aura or biofield. Through focused intention and the channeling of universal life force energy, these areas are gently addressed.
What's happening beneath the surface is a restoration of energetic flow. Blocked energy begins to move. The nervous system softens into a state of deep rest. The body's own innate healing intelligence activates.
What Does Reiki Feel Like?
This is the question I love most, because the answer is so beautifully varied. Common experiences include:
- Deep warmth or gentle tingling in the body
- A profound sense of peace, safety, or being held
- Emotional release, tears, laughter, or simply a lifting of heaviness
- Vivid imagery, colors, or a dreamlike state
- Falling into a deep, restful semi-sleep
- A feeling of lightness or clarity upon coming out of the session
Some people feel dramatic shifts in their very first session. Others notice subtle but meaningful changes in the days that follow, better sleep, less anxiety, a greater sense of calm. Every experience is valid and unique.
What Can Reiki Help With?
Reiki is not a substitute for medical care, but it works powerfully alongside it. People seek out Reiki for a wide range of reasons:
- Stress, anxiety, and chronic overwhelm
- Grief, loss, and emotional pain
- Burnout and depletion
- Major life transitions
- Spiritual disconnection or a desire for deeper meaning
- Physical tension or discomfort held in the body
- A general sense that something is "off", even when they can't name what
What makes Reiki unique is that it works holistically. It doesn't just address symptoms, it tends to the whole person. Many clients come in for one issue and find that multiple areas of their life begin to shift.
Is There Science Behind Reiki?
The scientific study of energy healing is still evolving, but the evidence base is growing. Studies have shown that Reiki can reduce cortisol levels, lower heart rate and blood pressure, and activate the parasympathetic nervous system, the body's rest-and-repair state. Hospitals including those in the Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins network have integrated Reiki into their patient care programs.
Quantum physics tells us that everything, including our bodies, is fundamentally made of energy. The idea that energy can be influenced, directed, and healed is not as fringe as it might once have seemed.
That said, I think the most compelling evidence is experiential. The people who have been most skeptical walking into a session are often the ones who walk out most transformed.
Who Can Receive Reiki?
Reiki is safe and gentle for virtually everyone. It is non-invasive, requires no physical manipulation, and carries no risk of harm. You don't need to believe in it for it to work, you only need to be open to receiving.
Sessions are fully clothed. There is nothing you need to do, say, or prepare. You simply arrive, settle in, and let the healing find you.
"You don't need to understand Reiki for it to work. You just have to show up."
How is Reiki Different From Other Healing Modalities?
Unlike massage, Reiki does not require physical manipulation of the body. Unlike therapy, it doesn't require you to talk through or analyze your experiences. Unlike meditation, it doesn't require practice or skill, you simply receive.
Reiki works on the energetic root of what's happening, which is why it can reach places that other modalities sometimes cannot. It is also deeply complementary, many clients use Reiki alongside therapy, acupuncture, yoga, and traditional medicine with excellent results.
