Can You Learn Reiki Online? A Reiki Master's Honest Answer

← Back to Journal

When people first feel the pull to learn Reiki, one of the first questions they ask me is whether it can really be learned through a screen. It is a fair question. Reiki is a hands-on practice, and it can feel strange to imagine learning something so felt and so personal from a video.

But here is something that surprises a lot of people. Mikao Usui, who founded Usui Reiki, did not receive Reiki in a classroom. He received it alone, during a period of fasting and meditation on Mount Kurama in Japan. The energy has never needed a particular room. What it needs is good teaching, a proper attunement, and your own willingness to practice.

What You Actually Need to Learn Reiki

Whether you learn in person or online, every Reiki Level 1 training comes down to the same three pieces:

• The teaching. What Reiki is, where it comes from, the five Reiki principles, how energy moves through the body and the chakras, and how to give a session to yourself and others.
• The attunement. The process where a Reiki Master opens your channel to Reiki. This is what makes it Reiki rather than simply relaxation.
• Your practice. Using Reiki on yourself, ideally every day, so it becomes something you know in your hands and body, not just in your head.

The teaching translates beautifully to video. In many ways it is better, because you can pause, rewatch, and go back to a hand position as many times as you need. Your practice happens at home either way. So the real question is the attunement.

Can a Reiki Attunement Be Given Remotely?

Yes. Reiki is not limited by distance, which is the same reason distance Reiki sessions work. A remote attunement is given by a Reiki Master with the same intention and the same process as an in-person one. Many people tell me their remote attunement felt every bit as powerful as they had hoped, and often more.

What matters most is that a real person is attuning you. Be cautious of courses that only email you a certificate, or that offer a "self-attunement" with no teacher involved. In my Usui Reiki Level 1 course, every student receives a private, one-on-one attunement with me, either in person at my studio in Napa or over Zoom.

What to Look For in an Online Reiki Course

• A teacher who is a Usui Reiki Master and tells you openly who they are and how they trained
• A live attunement with a real person, not just a recording
• Clear teaching on hand positions for yourself and for others
• A workbook or written material you can come back to
• A way to ask your teacher questions directly
• A certificate that is awarded after you complete the course and receive your attunement

Is Learning Reiki Online Right for You?

Online learning is a wonderful fit if you want to go at your own pace, if you live far from a Reiki teacher, or if life is simply busy. You can watch a lesson after the kids are asleep, or practice your hand positions on your lunch break. The most important thing is not where you learn, but that you keep showing up for your practice afterwards.

Common Questions

Is an online Reiki certification legitimate?

An online Reiki certification is legitimate when it comes from a qualified Reiki Master and includes a real attunement. Reiki has no single governing body, so what gives a certificate meaning is the lineage and training of the teacher and the attunement you receive.

Do I need any experience to learn Reiki online?

No. Reiki Level 1 is where every practitioner begins. Most people start knowing very little about Reiki beyond a feeling that they want to learn it.

How long does an online Reiki Level 1 course take?

Most people complete a Level 1 course within a week. In my course you have up to three months to finish the lessons and receive your attunement, so you can go at your own pace.
