How Long Does It Take to Learn Reiki?

The short answer

You can complete Reiki Level 1 in a few days to a week, and you are able to give Reiki from the moment you are attuned. After that, there is a 21 day integration period. Feeling truly confident and connected usually comes over the following weeks and months of daily self-practice.

When people ask me how long it takes to learn Reiki, they usually mean one of three things. How long the course takes, how long until they can actually use it, and how long until it feels natural. The answers are a little different, so let me take them one at a time.

How Long Reiki Level 1 Takes

Traditional in-person Reiki Level 1 classes are often taught over a weekend. Online, you get to set the pace. In my Usui Reiki Level 1 course, most students finish the video lessons and workbook within a week. But I know life is busy, so you have up to three months to complete the course and your attunement with me.

When You Can Start Using Reiki

Right away. Once you receive your attunement, Reiki is available to you. You do not need years of study before you are allowed to place your hands on yourself and let it flow. Many of my students give themselves Reiki the very same evening.

The First 21 Days

After your attunement, there is a traditional 21 day integration period. Your energy is adjusting to its new connection, and this is the most important time to build your daily practice. Giving yourself Reiki every day during these three weeks is one of the best things you can do for yourself as a new practitioner.

"Reiki is available to you from the moment you are attuned. Confidence comes from using it."

How Long Until It Feels Natural

This is the part that is different for everyone. For most people, the confidence comes from simple repetition: placing your hands, breathing, noticing what you feel. Within a few weeks of daily practice, most students tell me Reiki starts to feel like a part of them rather than something they are trying to do right.

Reiki is a lifelong practice. Even after many years, it keeps deepening. That is one of the most beautiful things about it.

How Long Until You Can Practice on Clients

If your goal is to offer Reiki professionally, most practitioners continue on to Level 2 after a period of practice at Level 1. Level 1 is traditionally for yourself and the people close to you, and Level 2 is where most people begin working with clients.

Common Questions

Can you learn Reiki in one day?

You can complete the teaching and receive your attunement in a short time, and Reiki is available to you from the moment you are attuned. Building a confident practice takes daily self-practice over the following weeks.

How many hours a day should I practice Reiki?

There is no set amount. Many practitioners give themselves Reiki for 10 to 30 minutes a day, often in the morning or before sleep. Consistency matters more than length.

How long do I have to finish your Reiki course?

Most students finish within a week. You have up to three months from enrolling to complete the course and your one-on-one attunement.
